E/M coding means Evaluation and Management. It also called as Inpatient coding. When a patient visited the family physician at his clinic or in hospital for evaluation of their medical condition, the physician and patient encounter is translated into five digit codes called CPT (Current Procedure Terminology) codes. These are the numerical codes submitted to the insurance companies (Government or private) for their payment.
The E/M codes are categorized as per visit like physician clinic visit of hospital visit. Even they are classified as per the visit type like initial visit or established visit. There are five levels of the codes depends upon the medical care provided by the physician to the patient.
